Last week I was in Savannah, Georgia and had a day to visit some historic sites. Fort Pulaski was built to guard the river approaches to Savannah. It was complete in 1847. In 1861 the fort was seized by Confederate forces. A year later after a 30 hour bombardment by Union forces, the fort surrendered. The damage on the fort walls dates back to that bombardment. This fort is well worth visiting. I took my time walking around the fort and it only took about 2.5 hours to see everything.
